Level IV Trauma Center

Trauma is the leading cause of death and disability in children and young adults in Kansas. The Kansas trauma system strives to ensure each patient is properly triaged and matched to the hospital with the most appropriate resources as quickly as possible. This system increases survival and decreases the chance of permanent disability for those who require rapid, specialized treatment. The systems are made to benefit the population with the goal that all injured patients should achieve ideal care and maximum potential for recovery.

It includes rural and urban areas. Rural trauma care has several complications. A few examples are geographic location, extrication times, distance to immediate healthcare. Trauma care includes prehospital care all the way through rehabilitation. It also includes prevention.

A designated trauma center is prepared to provide a full range of emergency care, including assessment, resuscitation, and stabilization. Designated trauma centers must meet vital criteria that ensure capability and performance. These criteria are outlined by the American College of Surgeons and recognized by the Kansas Advisory Committee on Trauma.

Ashland Health Center is a Level IV Trauma Center.

We provide:

  • 24/7 coverage by doctors trained in advanced life support (ATLS) protocols. Nurses are trained in Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) protocols.

  • 24/7 laboratory and diagnostic imaging coverage, and

  • close working relationships with local and regional EMS.

When a trauma occurs the team is activated. It consists of doctor, nurses, laboratory and radiology staff. A detailed evaluation is performed along with any needed lifesaving interventions. Sometimes, a higher level of care may be needed, and patients are transferred to a Level I, II or III trauma facility. The data collected is sent in to the state registry to improve the effectiveness of the local hospital and others throughout the state. We have working relationships with Level I trauma centers in Wichita to ensure the quickest and best care available.

The community can have confidence in the care provided because of designation and continued education obtained by the staff. Many hours are spent taking the required classes, continued education & skills, data collection, and providing prevention education. When a traumatic injury occurs you or your loved one will receive professional care by a well-trained team.
